A new CFO may arrive expecting to focus on strategy, only to find that the immediate challenge is understanding the finance function itself: Which numbers can be trusted? Which processes are fragile? Which issues need attention first?

The pull to do everything

It is easy to respond by taking on every problem personally. That may help briefly, but it is not a sustainable way to lead a function. Progress depends on building shared clarity: identifying the most urgent risks, agreeing ownership, setting priorities and communicating what the team can realistically deliver.

Delegation and priorities

Delegation is part of that work. So are trusted colleagues and mentors who can offer perspective. A finance leader does not have to solve everything alone to be accountable for the outcome.

Building strong foundations

The strongest foundations are often built through consistent habits: clear communication, calm decision-making, follow-through and respect for the people doing the work. Those habits help transform a function from constant firefighting into a team that can support better decisions.

Key takeawayLeadership is not only about what the finance function reports. It is also about the trust, focus and capability the leader helps the organisation build.
